Money Matters-Understanding the West African CFA Franc (XOF) – Senegal Money

The West African Franc is denoted by the sign XOF. It is the currency used by a bloc of West African countries including Senegal. However, our money sending tip is in the context of Senegal.

As a customer who wants to send money to Senegal, but you sometimes find it difficult to understand your beneficiary when they tell you about the amount in the local language.

Here are the tips you can follow to increase your understanding of the West African Franc (XOF) or sometimes called just CFA for sending money to Senegal.

Tip 1: Always ask the amount in CFA franc.

Tip 2: The value in local language (for example Wolof or Mandinka) is always different to its CFA franc amount.

For example: CFA/XOF 10,000.00 has a different value in local languages as well as how it is called.

Wollof – CFA 10,000.00 is called Nyari Junneh (2,000).

Mandinka – CFA 10,000.00 is called Wuli fuula (2,000).

Tip 3: Ask for the CFA amount and once you know this, to find out how this is called in the local language, you simply divide the amount by 5.

For example, CFA 10,000.00

In Wollof, it is called nyari junneh (2,000). That is, 10,000/5.

In Mandinka, it is called wuli fuula (2,000). That is, 10,000/5.

CFA 5,000.00

In Wollof = is called junneh (1,000)

In Mandinka = it is called wuli killing (1,000).

CFA1000.00

In Wollof = it is called nyari tehmer (200)

In Mandinka = it is called kemmeh fuula (200).

Scenario

For example, you received a call from your beneficiary who asked you to send him money. He said to you in Wollof, please send me GIROMI JUNNEH (5,000). This amount is not the same as CFA 5,000.00.

You will need to multiply 5,000 x 5. This will be CFA 25,000.00 (meaning giromi junneh in Wollof).

He said to you in Mandinka, please send me WULI LULU (5,000). This amount is not the same as CFA 5,000.00.

You will need to multiply 5,000 x 5. This will be CFA 25,000.00 (meaning wuli lulu In Mandinka).
